Tuesday 27th May 2008
This week, the Church remembers: Lanfranc, Prior of Le Bec, Scholar, Archbishop of Canterbury (1089) on Wednesday 28th May 2008; Josephine Butler, Social Reformer (1906), Joan of Arc, Visionary (1431) and Apolo Kivebulaya, Priest, Evangelist in Central Africa (1933) on Friday 30th; and the Visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth on Saturday 31st.
This Sunday is the Second Sunday after Trinity.
The vital role of theological training has been recognised in provisional arrangements to secure the future of funding for clergy training, following changes to higher education funding announced last year. Following extensive consultation between the Ministry Division of the Archbishops' Council of the Church of England (acting as 'lead' denomination in consultation with other churches through the Ecumenical Strategy Group for Ministerial Training) and HEFCE, the following potential solution has been agreed in principle. This emerging solution will now be subject to extensive consultation across Churches and training institutions:

A reminder that the next meeting of the Diocesan Synod is on Saturday 12th July at St Mary’s, Bramall Lane beginning at 9.00am.
Monday 09 June at 7.30pm. The Bishop will be joined by his wife Judith and members of his family at the all- ticket service at the Cathedral which, as well as an opportunity to say goodbye, is a thanksgiving for his forty years as a priest. Tickets have been widely distributed throughout the Diocese and it is expected that most parishes will be represented. There are no additional tickets available and the Cathedral will not be able to admit people who do not have a ticket.
The Cathedral has worked closely with the Bishop to plan the Order of Service. The choice of music and readings reflect something of Bishop Jack’s beliefs and tastes and Bishop Jack writes about some of his choices in notes that are included in the Order of Service. The service will end with the hymn ‘For all the Saints’, which Bishop Jack dedicates to the ‘saints’ of his former parish of All Saints and Martyrs, Langley, in the Diocese of Manchester who, the Bishop writes, taught him how to Be a priest. Speaking about the service Bishop Jack said, ‘It will be a very special occasion, which I am looking forward to, but, of course, I will have mixed feelings because saying goodbye is never easy’. He added: ‘Judith and I hope that many of our Friendships established over our time in Sheffield will continue as we move not too far away to Derbyshire’. The Bishop continues as Bishop until later in the summer but will not be undertaking any major engagements.
Bishop Cyril will ordain deacons at a special service in Sheffield Cathedral on Sunday 29th June (10.30am).All of the candidates will go on an ordination retreat at Whirlow Grange from Thurs-Sun 26-29 June. The retreat conductor, who will also preach in the Cathedral on the Sunday will be the Revd Dr Alan Bartlett, tutor in Church History and Anglican Studies at St John’s College, Durham.
