EDUCATION FOR DISCIPLESHIP - FOUNDATIONS OF FAITH

"Foundations of Faith" is a discipleship course,  which is perhaps more than most parishes can usually offer, but which is less demanding than (e.g.) Reader training.

"Foundations of Faith" is a sixteen-session course that will run on mid-week evenings, divided into two 8-week parts.   It is open to all who wish to explore the Christian faith in a structured way, in an environment that is supportive and open.  Individuals or parish groups may participate.  The course is appropriate for those who simply want to find out more about the Christian faith, but can also be particularly helpful for those who are exploring what their vocation and ministry might be.   The course will be offered in two 8-week parts (Part One in 2009, Part Two in 2010).

The course has no minimum academic entry requirement.  The content is quite thorough, and teaching and learning methods should make the course open and rewarding for all participants.

Part One will cover, with two evenings on each topic:
- Using the Bible
- The History of the Church
- Worship
- Ethics

Part One will be offered in 2009 in Sheffield on Tuesday evenings at St Mary's Ecclesfield, from 20th January to 17th March; and will then be repeated in a parish in Doncaster from the end of April to the end of June.  The course will run in a parish in Rotherham from the end of September to the end of November.

Part Two will be offered in 2010, in different host parishes (one in each of Rotherham,  Doncaster, and Sheffield) and will cover:
- Christian Belief (two evenings)
- The Church, Mission, and Ministry (four evenings)
-  Spirituality and Vocation (two evenings)

(You do not have to commit to Part Two to take Part One, neither do you have to have done Part One to take Part Two.  The intention is to repeat Part One on 2011, Part Two in 2010, and so on).

The venue on each occasion will be a local parish church, with the aim that there will be a core base of participants from the host parish, with other participants from nearby parishes and deaneries.

The hope is that for each person who wishes to participate, a course will be running near them soon. Each Part will cost each participant £25.  It is hoped that PCC's may wish to support their church members who are undertaking the course.

What is DOXA?

DOXA is our 18 session Diocesan Discipleship Course

DOXA is different:

What’s in a name?

Why this approach and who’s it for?

DOXA aims to offer a different style of course to others on offer.

What DOXA’s about?

DOXA is rooted in a way of listening for God often expressed in the phrase ‘lex orandi, lex credendi’, (the law of prayer as the law of believing or what we pray indicates what we believe). For Anglicans in particular, listening for God involves:

Bishop Jack says 'A wide variety of people from within the Diocese have contributed to this course, representing the whole spectrum of life in the Diocese and indeed the Church of England. It is an excellent course. One of the best I have ever seen and I do recommend it wholeheartedly'.
